In November, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced it was giving up on the drug Celebrex in the wake of a new safety study finding it had been linked to increased gastrointestinal side effects, including heart attack and stroke. The agency’s findings come from an earlier study in which Celebrex was given in the mail and not in a pill, but the study’s lead author, Dr. Steven Nissen, a professor of family medicine at the University of California, San Diego, wrote in an email to theJournal of the American Medical Association.
“Celebrex has been a game-changer for patients with heart disease,” Nissen wrote. “It’s a lifesaving drug that has been shown to be safe and effective for many patients. It can help manage and treat pain and inflammation in patients with heart failure.”
In the study, researchers analyzed data from over 5,000 arthritis patients who were given Celebrex in the mail. They analyzed the data for the years 2006 through 2015.
The results were published Monday in theJAMA Internal Medicine
“These results provide further evidence that Celebrex is safe and effective for some patients with arthritis,” Nissen wrote.
Researchers at Stanford University’s Medical School’s School of Medicine looked at records of more than 1,200 patients in the year 2006 who were given Celebrex.
“In the year 2004, there was a statistically significant reduction in the risk of heart attacks and stroke,” Nissen wrote.
“This is the second time that this drug has been linked to cardiovascular events, with the first being in 2007,” he added.
A separate study from thefound the drug to be a safe and effective treatment for arthritis patients.
Dr. Steven Nissen is the study’s lead author. He’s an assistant professor of family medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.
Nissen was not involved in the study, however, and did not disclose his role in the study.
Celebrex sales were the subject of a study at the National Institutes of Health. The researchers analyzed data from over 5,000 arthritis patients who were given Celebrex in the mail.“These results are very exciting,” Nissen said. “These results are consistent with other studies that have shown that Celebrex is safe and effective.”
“I hope this paper will help inform policy and practice in arthritis care,” he added.
